Mumford & Sons' guitarist and banjo player Winston Marshall has been skewered on social media for his now-deleted praise of right-wing agitator Andy Ngo.

Over the weekend, Marshall took to Twitter to praise Ngo's latest move on his mission to discredit leftist groups: a book laughably titled Unmasked: Inside Antifa's Radical Plan to Destroy Democracy.

Sharing a photo of the book — which comes complete with a note of praise from conservative talking head Tucker Carlson — Marshall wrote, "Congratulations @MrAndyNgo. Finally had the time to read your important book. You're a brave man."


Ngo and his anti-antifa beliefs shot to prominence in June 2019 upon attending a far-right rally and counter-protest in Portland. Footage from the event shows Ngo being punched and kicked, before being egged, sprayed with silly string, and having a milkshake dumped on his head.

Portland police would later tweet that the milkshakes being thrown by protesters may have been mixed with quick-dry cement, a flimsy claim conservative outlets including Fox News had no problem peddling to viewers.

In a review of Unmasked published last month in the Los Angeles Times, journalist Alexander Nazaryan wrote that Ngo's book "will do no more to help Americans understand antifa than Borat helped us understand Kazakhstan," deeming it "a cudgel for Trumpists to swing whenever they need to obscure their own complicity in events like the Capitol riot."

Marshall's tweet is not the first time Mumford & Sons have been called out for their embrace of controversial figures, after the banjo player, bassist Ted Dwane and keyboardist Ben Lovett welcomed Dr. Jordan Peterson to their studio in 2018.
