Rone VOOD(OO)

Meant as a bridge between two albums, French electronic producer Rone's new EP VOOD(OO) is a whirlwind effort that finds complicated ways to say the loveliest things possible, employing synth layers and orchestral instrumentation throughout the four tracks.

Opener "ETC" is almost classical in its composition, fusing Rone's electronic precision with the piano-and-string inclinations of Bachar Mar-Khalifé. "Dolls" continues in that same full-bodied style, creating walls of synth instrumentals that build to a towering crescendo two minutes in. "Pankot" begins with a feeling of trumpet-infused mourning that builds into a glorious celebratory song that can only be described as an anthem.

VOOD(OO) is characterized by Rone's striking attention to detail, making this a truly impressive followup to 2015's Creatures. The producer's epilogue — title track "VOOD(OO)" — was composed by the group Vacarme, and rounds off a succession of fine-tuned yet explosive songs. (Infine)
